Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez is alerting residents to be especially vigilant and not speak to individuals who come to their door claiming to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the Department of Health or who are offering to sell them COVID-19 test kits.
While there have not been any reports of these particular scams to the Prosecutor’s Office from local law enforcement in Hudson County, other counties have reported imposters attempting to sell kits and or gain access to homes. Similar reports have been posted on social media.
“Unfortunately, as we have seen in prior public health and safety emergencies, there are a handful of people who look to target individuals and take advantage of the public concern,” said Prosecutor Suarez. “If anyone comes to the door claiming to have COVID-19 home kits, do not let them in and contact your local police department.”
Additionally, federal authorities are urging residents to be cautious with online scammers who could potentially try to impersonate CDC or local health officials through phone calls, websites, email, social media, or text message.
