Person fatally struck by Hudson-Bergen Light Rail near Jersey City’s Newport Station, NJ Transit says

JERSEY CITY — A Hudson-Bergen Light Rail train fatally struck a trespasser near Newport Station around 6:20 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, according to NJ Transit Director of Media Relations John Chartier.

The person was fatally injured. No identification has been released. The operator and 125 customers aboard were uninjured, Chartier said.

Service was briefly suspended and later resumed. NJ Transit Police are investigating.

Separately the same morning, a Raritan Valley Line train fatally struck a trespasser in Plainfield, NJ Transit said.

Anyone who sees a person on or near the tracks should call 911 or NJ Transit Police at 1-800-242-0236 and stay clear of the right of way.
